For almost a decade YouTube has been the go to spot for free music, pretty much any song or video you can think of is streaming on the site – From live concert footage to jazz covers – every thing is there for us. In the near future the site, with it’s one billion monthly unique visitors, will start charging for additional services.
This past Wednesday, YouTube released YouTube Music Key, a long awaited upgrade of its music service which whill include higher-quality audio for most songs and also give users the option of paying $8 a month for extra features, the most important one is removing those annoying YouTube ads.
YouTube still wants to be the go to spot for free music, but they also ‘..want to give fans more ways to enjoy music on YouTube, but also give artists more opportunities to connect with fans and earn more revenues,” said Christophe Muller, its music partnerships director.
Thanks to the internet the music industry sales have steadily gone down, they are dependent on payouts from streaming outlets like Spotify, Pandora and Apple’s Beats Music.
So the main question is, will this affect the way you watch videos on YouTube, so far the answer is no. You can still go to the site and stream all the videos you want. Who knows what the future my hold, but at the current time of the inception of this service YouTube will still be your go to for streaming music (along with Spotify, Pandora and Apples Beats Music).
YouTube Music Key will be available to users in the United States, Britain and a handful of other European countries. At the current time it will be in beta testing (invites only) and then introduced to the public by next year.
