January is normally a slow month for music, so expect a lot of news on which albums are going to drop this year. One of those albums, Kitsugi, is from Death Cab For Cutie. Its a new chapter for the group. If you can tell by the picture above they have dwindle down to three members. Founder member, guitarist and producer, Chris Walla has left the band. Fear not, he still has an influence with the other members.
Bassist Nick Harmer talks about the title and says, [Kitsugi.] “Its a Japanese style of art where they take fractured, broken ceramics and put them back together with very obvious, real gold. Its making the repair of an object a visual part of its history. That resonated with us as a philosophy, and it connected to a lot of what we were going through, both professionally and personally.”
“In the West, if you break an heirloom, you either throw it away or you make the repair as invisible as possible,” he continues. “But there’s this artistic movement in Japan where the repair of it, the damage of it, is more important as part of the history of something than repairing it to its original state.”
Chris Walla’s departure has affected the group and is motivating them to release their best music to date. Only time will tell when Kitsugi drops March 31st if it lives up to their expectations. Mark your calendars and check out the track list for Kintsugi below.
