Jay Z is Competing with Spotify By Buying Aspiro For $56m

The big news today is Jay Z is buying Spotify rival Tidal For $56M. The Scandinavian company that owns Tidal is Aspiro. The wave of the future seems to be in streaming, Jay-Z and his company Project Panther are getting on board. Parent company Aspiro currently runs an ad-free service called WiMP and the high-definition offering Tidal. Both are aimed at keen music lovers, with track recommendations, curated playlists and interviews with artists.

Tidal launched in the US and UK last year, and provides access to access to 25 million tracks in 16-bit FLAC format for $20 per month. That is more that Spotify and in better audio quality. Jay Z will most liley use his star power to propel the services into the spotlight, a move that could put the brand on track to compete against Spotify and Beats Music. In fact we are pretty sure his star power is working now, due to us writing about these music service.
